Rajkot’s Hirasar Airport has processed its first outbound cargo consignment, marking a milestone for the newly commissioned facility. A 600 kg shipment of silver ornaments was cleared and dispatched to Delhi from the airport’s passenger terminal.
Although a dedicated cargo terminal is still under construction, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) granted temporary clearance on July 23 to allow shipments via the passenger terminal, following repeated requests from logistics operators and jewellery traders.
The inaugural consignment was handled during night hours, with sources confirming that cargo examination and clearance have been scheduled for nighttime operations. Shipments booked on daytime flights will also be processed overnight and stored at the airport until departure.
Rajkot, a leading jewellery manufacturing hub, sends out nearly 10,000 kg of silver, gold and imitation ornaments daily to markets across India. Industry representatives noted that the airport’s new cargo facility is expected to reduce logistics costs and mitigate theft risks compared to road transport.
