Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) reported steady growth in air cargo volumes in December, rounding off a resilient performance for 2025, supported by stronger exports, rising transshipment activity and expanding connectivity.
Cargo throughput in December increased 3.6% year on year to 462,000 tonnes, with both export and transshipment segments recording gains. Transshipment volumes were particularly strong, rising 18% compared with the same period last year. Trade flows with Southeast Asia, Europe and the Chinese Mainland contributed the most to the growth during the month.
For the full year, HKIA handled 5.1 million tonnes of cargo, representing a 2.7% increase over 2024, reinforcing the airport’s position as the world’s leading air cargo hub.
Passenger traffic also continued to recover strongly. Passenger numbers rose 13.5% year on year in December and increased 15% for the full year.
Connectivity was further enhanced during the year with the launch of 30 new destinations, including Abu Dhabi, Brussels and Dallas, alongside increased frequencies on major routes. The airport community’s efforts were recognised with around 80 international awards across various operational and service categories.
Recent infrastructure investments have played a key role in supporting growth. The commissioning of the Three-Runway System at the end of 2024 has significantly increased HKIA’s capacity to handle more flights and airlines, while cargo-focused operators have continued to expand their presence.
Hong Kong Air Cargo, based at HKIA, has been scaling up services, while Hactl-owned Hong Kong Air Cargo Industry Services Limited recently deepened its cooperation with Flexport, positioning Hong Kong as a key transit hub for the logistics provider. Earlier in the year, Hactl also began handling shipments via the Air-Land Fresh Lane, a dedicated corridor for live and chilled seafood and fruit entering the Greater Bay Area through HKIA and the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge, supported by streamlined customs and quarantine processes. Cathay Cargo was the first airline to make use of this route.
According to Airports Council International data, HKIA handled 4.9 million tonnes of cargo in 2024, a 14% year-on-year increase, laying the foundation for continued growth in 2025.
