Hong Kong port handled 1.079 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in July 2025, down 6.5% from 1.154 million TEUs in the same month last year, according to preliminary data released by the Census and Statistics Department based on reports from container terminal operators.
Throughput at Kwai Tsing Container Terminals, the city’s primary hub for containerized cargo, reached 819,000 TEUs in July—2.9% lower than the 844,000 TEUs recorded in July 2024. Volumes handled outside Kwai Tsing declined more sharply, falling 16.3% year-on-year to 260,000 TEUs from 311,000 TEUs.
For the first seven months of 2025, cumulative throughput stood at 7.631 million TEUs, representing a 3.7% decrease compared with 7.931 million TEUs in the same period of 2024.
The Census and Statistics Department compiles Hong Kong’s official economic and trade data, while the Maritime and Port Development Board, a statutory government body, is responsible for policy coordination and promoting Hong Kong’s position as an international maritime centre.
