The Indian Coast Guard has commissioned ICGS Akshay in Goa, adding a new-generation Fast Patrol Vessel to its fleet and strengthening its coastal security capabilities. Built by Goa Shipyard Limited, the vessel is the first of eight such ships being constructed under the programme and reflects India’s growing focus on indigenous shipbuilding.

ICGS Akshay is designed to support a wide range of operations, including maritime law enforcement, coastal surveillance, search and rescue, marine environmental protection and assistance to vessels in distress. With its induction, the Coast Guard is expected to improve its response capacity across India’s vast maritime domain.

Officials said the commissioning of the vessel marks an important milestone in the force’s modernisation drive. The addition of Akshay is also aligned with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat push, as the ship has been designed and built domestically. Its entry into service is seen as part of a broader effort to enhance maritime readiness and safeguard the country’s coastline more effectively.

Beyond security duties, the vessel is expected to play a key role in maintaining safe and clean seas. Its deployment comes at a time when maritime threats, illegal activity and environmental concerns continue to require stronger monitoring and faster response from coastal security agencies.
