Seventeen vessels loaded with fertilizers destined for India are currently stranded in the Persian Gulf due to the ongoing West Asia conflict, prompting the Indian government to explore alternative shipping routes through Saudi Arabia’s Yanbu Port.
Alternative Route Plan
To circumvent the disruption, Indian authorities are considering a contingency plan involving overland transportation of fertilizers by truck to Yanbu Port on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast, from where shipments would be dispatched to India. While this alternative route is longer and more expensive than the conventional Persian Gulf route, officials have stated it is necessary to prevent further delays in critical agricultural inputs.
Agricultural Impact
Fertilizer deliveries have already been delayed by two months, coinciding with peak demand for the Kharif cropping season. Continued disruption could impact the upcoming Rabi sowing season as well, threatening agricultural productivity during critical planting periods.
Given India’s heavy reliance on imported fertilizer shipments, additional delays could significantly affect farmers’ access to essential inputs. The government has emphasized the need to ensure timely delivery of fertilizers to agricultural regions, even if it requires utilizing longer and costlier routing alternatives.
