India, Sri Lanka Exchange Agreements for USD 350 Million Credit Line

India and Sri Lanka exchanged agreements on Indian Rupee-denominated Lines of Credit worth USD 350 million, forming part of the USD 450 million reconstruction package extended by New Delhi following the destruction caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

What was agreed during the meeting in Colombo?

The agreements were exchanged following a meeting between Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Colombo. The two sides reviewed key bilateral projects, including India-assisted development initiatives in Sri Lanka. India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, and other officials were also present. The Indian High Commission said the Lines of Credit will support reconstruction, infrastructure development and procurement requirements arising in the aftermath of the cyclone.

India had earlier announced a USD 450 million reconstruction package for Sri Lanka following Cyclone Ditwah, comprising USD 350 million in concessional Lines of Credit and USD 100 million in grants. The assistance covers rehabilitation and restoration of road, railway and bridge connectivity, construction of destroyed and damaged houses, support for health and education sectors affected by the cyclone, agricultural assistance to address short and medium-term shortages, and strengthening disaster response and preparedness.

Earlier in the day, Misri met his Sri Lankan counterpart, Foreign Secretary Aruni Ranaraja, to discuss ways to deepen bilateral ties, with the two officials also covering regional and global issues of mutual interest.
