India plans to roll out dedicated outreach programmes in 40 key textile-importing countries, including the UK, Japan, South Korea, Germany and Canada, in a bid to cushion the blow from steep new US tariffs, officials said.

The United States last week imposed a 50% duty on Indian imports, effective August 27, threatening more than $48 billion worth of exports across sectors such as textiles, gems and jewellery, shrimp, leather, footwear and machinery.

While India exports textiles to over 220 countries, the top 40 account for imports worth $590 billion globally and hold the key to diversification. India’s current share in global textile trade stands at just 4.1%–5%, leaving significant headroom for growth.

According to Commerce Ministry, “In each of these 40 markets, the effort will be to position India as a reliable source of quality, sustainable and innovative textile products”.  The campaign will be spearheaded by Indian missions overseas in coordination with export promotion councils (EPCs).

The textile and apparel industry in India is valued at about $179 billion in 2024–25, with $37 billion coming from exports. EPCs will drive the diversification effort through market mapping, identifying high-demand categories, and linking production hubs such as Surat, Panipat, Tiruppur and Bhadohi with overseas buyers. They will also advise exporters on free trade agreement benefits, sustainability compliance and certifications.
