Indian Railways has started freight train services from Nagaland, marking another step in expanding rail connectivity across the Northeast. The development comes shortly after both passenger and cargo operations were launched in Mizoram with the inauguration of the Bairabi–Sairang rail line by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Freight services in Nagaland commenced from Molvom station in September. The first inbound consignment, a rake of 41 wagons carrying cement from Telangana, arrived on September 24. Five days later, on September 29, the first outbound service was flagged off with 42 wagons of stone chips destined for Jirania.
Meanwhile, Mizoram has also seen steady freight activity. In September alone, eight rakes were unloaded at Sairang station. These included cement, stone chips, automobiles, ready-mix concrete, and sand. On September 19, the first parcel consignment was dispatched from Sairang, transporting Anthurium flowers to Delhi’s Anand Vihar Terminal via the Sairang–Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express.
According to Indian Railways, the growing demand for both passenger and cargo services underlines the transformative impact of improved connectivity in the Northeast. Beyond enhanced travel options, the new links are expected to stimulate trade, open access to larger markets for local products, and generate new economic opportunities across the region.
