Indian Railways is set to overhaul its wagon design policy to allow industries to develop commodity-specific wagons, a move aimed at boosting freight traffic and improving cargo handling efficiency. The reform is intended to make rail freight more flexible, industry-friendly, and better aligned with the needs of different commodities.
Under the proposed policy, companies will be able to design wagons according to their own operational requirements, while safety and technical approvals will remain with the railway authorities. The change is expected to help railways attract more cargo, support innovation in rolling stock, and improve loading, unloading, and transport efficiency across the freight network.
