Indian Register of Shipping Sets Sights on Hamburg for European Expansion

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) is advancing plans to open a new office in Hamburg, marking a strategic push into one of Europe’s leading maritime hubs. The German entity is currently under registration, according to the classification society.

Why is IRS choosing Hamburg for its European base?

IRS, a full member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) and recognised by the European Commission since 2016 under Regulation (EC) No. 391/2009, has been steadily expanding its international footprint. Hamburg’s position as a leading global maritime centre gives IRS direct access to shipowners, ship managers, shipyards, marine equipment manufacturers, technology companies, and research institutions operating in the region.

What will the Hamburg office focus on?

The new base is designed to deepen engagement with European manufacturers while opening a channel for them into India’s expanding shipbuilding and maritime market, through IRS’s approval, type approval, certification, and compliance services. With India pursuing significant growth in shipbuilding and maritime manufacturing capacity, the office is positioned to support technology partnerships, joint ventures, and localisation arrangements between Indian and German or European companies.

Executive Chairman Arun Sharma said Hamburg represents a natural strategic location as IRS strengthens its European presence, with the aim of building closer industry relationships and supporting the adoption of advanced technologies. He pointed to green shipping, alternative fuels, decarbonisation, digitalisation, and smart ship solutions as key areas for potential collaboration.
