India’s port sector could save up to Rs 20,000 crore annually in cargo handling costs by embracing artificial intelligence (AI), said Gourav Vallabh, member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM).

In recent remarks at an industry forum, Vallabh stressed the urgent need for technological upgrades to tackle inefficiencies plaguing cargo operations. Manual processes, container delays, and poor resource planning currently inflate expenses across key ports.

“AI offers game-changing optimization for ports,” Vallabh stated. “It can forecast maintenance, enhance tracking, and boost throughput, unlocking Rs 20,000 crore in yearly savings.” This estimate targets automation at hubs like Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Chennai, and Visakhapatnam, which dominate India’s container volumes.

The initiative supports the Sagarmala programme’s focus on faster turnaround times and infrastructure upgrades. Early AI trials at ports like Mundra and Kandla have delivered 15-20% gains in berthing efficiency and cargo movement.

With India’s ambitions to rank among the world’s top container ports by 2030 amid surging trade, AI adoption faces hurdles including data integration, workforce training, and cyber risks. Policymakers advocate stronger industry collaborations to accelerate rollout.
