The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has achieved a historic milestone, recording an all-time high cargo movement of 145.84 million metric tonnes (MMT) on National Waterways this year.

The announcement was made at Water Voyage Northeast by Sunil Kumar Singh, Vice Chairman and Chairman In-charge of IWAI, who underscored the growing role of inland water transport in India’s logistics ecosystem.

He also highlighted the increasing contribution of the North Eastern Region (NER), where over one million metric tonnes of cargo was transported via National Waterways during FY 2024–25. The record growth reflects the government’s strong push for sustainable, cost-efficient transport solutions, while enhancing trade connectivity and economic integration in the Northeast.
