A Japanese delegation met with officials at Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla, on May 28, 2026, for an insightful interaction meeting chaired by Shri Sushil Kumar Singh, IRSME, Chairman of DPA, to explore maritime cooperation and future opportunities.
Strategic Discussions
The discussions centered on port-led development, infrastructure enhancement, technological innovation, sustainable growth, and future opportunities in the maritime sector. The meeting focused on identifying potential areas of collaboration in port infrastructure, shipbuilding, and the broader maritime ecosystem.
Shipbuilding Interest
The Japanese delegation has previously visited the Kandla region to explore emerging opportunities in shipbuilding and ship repair activities, marking a renewed push toward expanding maritime cooperation and infrastructure development. During earlier discussions, the delegation showed interest in understanding the operational capacity, infrastructural readiness, and future expansion plans of the port-led industrial ecosystem.
Site Visits
The delegation undertook detailed site visits across multiple locations within the port operational area, receiving firsthand exposure to proposed shipyard sites and surrounding development zones at Kandla and nearby Veera. The visit aimed to assess the physical landscape, logistical connectivity, and feasibility of setting up shipbuilding and repair facilities in the region.
Future Collaboration
The interaction concluded on a positive note, with both sides expressing interest in continuing discussions on potential investment opportunities and technical cooperation. DPA Kandla is being positioned as a key maritime hub under India’s long-term port-led development strategy.
