JNPA celebrates historic milestone at the GMIS 2023, unveils four key projects at the hands of Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi

●             JNPA kick-starts four new projects worth INR 8363.16 Crores

●             These projects are expected to increase port container capacity by 35%

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) marked a historic event as Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for four groundbreaking initiatives during the Global Maritime India Summit 2023. These initiatives, aimed at enhancing the port’s capabilities, will establish a fresh standard in India’s infrastructure expansion, trade facilitation, and economic advancement. The port’s container capacity will experience a significant 35% boost, escalating from 7.7 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to an impressive 10.4 million TEUs. Furthermore, the liquid cargo handling capacity is set to surge by an impressive 62.5%.

The ceremony took place at the Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals Pvt. Ltd. Administration Building and was graced by the virtual presence of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who addressed the gathering and emphasized the importance of these projects for India’s trade and commerce.

The four projects inaugurated on this occasion are:

Foundation Stone Laying of Construction of Fourth Container Terminal-Phase II of JNPA on PPP basis by Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals Pvt. Ltd.: The construction of the Fourth Container Terminal, Phase II, at JNPA, on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis, is a significant step towards enhancing the port’s capacity to handle container traffic efficiently. This project is a partnership between JNPA and Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals Pvt. Ltd., promising to bring advanced infrastructure and logistics solutions to the region.

Foundation Stone Laying of Upgradation, Operation, Maintenance, and Transfer of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Container Terminal (JNPCT) on PPP basis by JNPA to Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminals Pvt. Ltd.: In a move to further streamline operations, JNPA has handed over the Upgradation, Operation, Maintenance, and Transfer of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Container Terminal (JNPCT) to Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal Pvt. Ltd. This strategic collaboration on a PPP basis will lead to increased efficiency and world-class services for container handling.

Inauguration of Newly Constructed Additional Liquid Berth Terminal: The new liquid berth terminal will play a vital role in handling liquid cargo, further diversifying the port’s capabilities and increasing its relevance in the global trade network. This project will ease pressure on the existing liquid jetty and cater to additional liquid cargo demand.

Dedicating a Port based Multi-Product Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to the nation: The launch of the Port-based Multi-Product SEZ at JNPA marks a significant stride towards fostering EXIM Trade and economic growth in the region. This initiative will provide a dedicated area for various industries, leading to increased investment option in manufacturing, services, trade sectors and thereby generating employment opportunities for regional eco system

Speaking about the inauguration of the four projects, Mr. Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chairman, JNPA said, “Today, as we set these projects in motion, we embark on a journey toward a more prosperous, efficient, and globally competitive port. These projects are a testament to our commitment to the economic growth of our nation.” He also added, “JNPA is honored to have received the support and presence of Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi during this momentous occasion, signifying a testament to the government’s commitment to advancing India’s maritime interests.”

The event was attended by esteemed dignitaries, government officials, industry leaders, and stakeholders, and marked a significant leap forward in JNPA’s journey to becoming a world-class port. The projects will undoubtedly have far-reaching effects on trade, commerce, and the economic landscape of the region, cementing JNPA’s status as a leading maritime gateway.
