Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, in association with Container Corporation of India, successfully hosted a trade meet in Ludhiana to mark the commencement of full-corridor rail operations via the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor.
WDFC Completion
The event celebrates the completion of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor following a successful trial run of freight trains on March 31, 2026. The final 102-kilometer section between JNPT and New Saphale (Vaitarna) became operational, establishing the entire 1,506-kilometer corridor linking Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Navi Mumbai.
The corridor is dedicated exclusively to freight operations, enabling trains to operate at higher speeds with greater load-carrying capacity compared to conventional rail networks.
Enhanced Connectivity
The WDFC provides a continuous route for cargo trains, enabling faster movement between production centers in northern India and the port, significantly supporting trade efficiency. The corridor’s electrified double-line infrastructure is now prepared for freight movement across the entire alignment.
Strategic Significance
The trade meet in Ludhiana, a major manufacturing and export hub in Punjab, aims to engage the regional trade community and promote enhanced rail connectivity between north India and India’s premier container port. JNPA currently sends and receives an average of nearly 20 trains daily.
The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor marks India’s second completed dedicated freight corridor and is expected to substantially reduce container train transit times while boosting cargo volumes between manufacturing regions and the port.
