Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA)- India’s Largest Container Port, in a landmark step towards sustainability, has declared that JNPA– Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has successfully transitioned to 100% green energy for its operations. The SEZ has entered into a new short-term open access agreement to procure 6.0 MW of grid-connected wind power, effective September 1, 2025, at a significantly reduced rate of Rs. 3.12/KWH. Speaking on the achievement, Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Chairperson, JNPA, and CMD, VPPL, said, “At JNPA, we firmly believe that sustainability and growth must go hand in hand. The transition of our SEZ to 100% green energy reflects our vision of creating a responsible, future-ready industrial ecosystem. This initiative not only reduces our environmental impact but also offers competitive advantages to industries operating within the SEZ. By leading this green shift,

JNPA is reaffirming its role as a frontrunner in driving India’s sustainable port-led industrial development. JNPA SEZ plays a pivotal role in our node-to-network strategy, enabling us to go beyond terminal services and solidify our position as a comprehensive port ecosystem player.” As a deemed licensee, JNPA SEZ procures electricity for its consumers through open access, in accordance with the guidelines set by the Ministry of Power. Since its inception in August 2021, the SEZ has been sourcing electricity from conventional sources at Rs. 6.30/KWH. This transition marks both an environmental and economic milestone, enabling greener operations while reducing costs. The move reinforces JNPA SEZ’s commitment to environmental responsibility, carbon footprint reduction, and sustainable industrial development, setting a benchmark for other economic zones across the country. This achievement underscores the relentless efforts of JNPA in steering towards impactful green initiatives and highlights its leadership in shaping a sustainable future for the port and logistics sector.
