JSW Infrastructure’s Rs 600-crore dry bulk cargo terminal mechanisation project at V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi is set for completion by the fourth quarter of the current fiscal, strengthening the port’s capacity to handle larger dry bulk cargo volumes.
What does the mechanisation project involve?
According to the company’s latest investor presentation, the project covers mechanisation of North Cargo Berth-III with a handling capacity of 7 million tonnes per annum. The terminal is designed to handle a range of dry bulk cargo, including coal and coke. Civil works related to the conveyor system have been completed, while building-related civil works remain in progress.
What is the structure of the concession agreement?
JSW Infrastructure signed the concession agreement with the VOC Port Authority in July 2024. The project is being executed on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer basis for a concession period of 30 years.
What does this mean for VOC Port’s cargo handling capability?
Once operational, the mechanised terminal is expected to significantly boost VOC Port’s ability to handle larger volumes of dry bulk cargo, supporting JSW Infrastructure’s broader capacity expansion strategy across its port network in India.
