JSW Infrastructure Ltd, part of the $23-billion JSW group, will evaluate a new proposed location for a greenfield deep-sea port in West Bengal—Dadanpatrabar in Purba Medinipur—after the newly elected Suvendu Adhikari government announced it would shift from Tajpur to this site. The company remains focused on the state’s industrial growth and rising cargo demand.

The Dadanpatrabar site has advantages over Tajpur, including government land where infrastructure facilities such as warehouses, rail, and road connectivity can be developed. Chief Minister Adhikari announced the new location after meetings with Karan Adani (CEO of APSEZ) and Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The new site reportedly has a better navigational channel connecting the berthing facility to the sea.

Rinkesh Roy, Joint Managing Director & CEO of JSW Infrastructure, emphasized that the navigational channel is the most critical element and that permissions from requisite authorities must be secured for the channel area. The firm will assess whether all permissions are available and evaluate the suitability of the location.

It is still unclear how the Bengal government will approach the new port development. Meanwhile, JSW has already secured the ₹832.25 crore Kolkata Port Container Terminal Project, which will add around 0.93 million TEUs of annual container handling capacity, significantly boosting cargo operations at East India’s largest port. The company also plans major investments at the Kolkata Dock System.
