L&T Energy GreenTech Ltd (LTEG), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), has signed a Joint Development Agreement with Japan’s ITOCHU Corporation to establish a 300 kilotons per annum (KTPA) green ammonia facility at Kandla, Gujarat.
Secured by L&T in 2024, the plant will produce green ammonia primarily for export. Under the agreement, ITOCHU will offtake the ammonia for bunkering operations in Singapore, supporting the maritime sector’s transition to cleaner fuels.
The project represents a significant milestone in sustainable energy infrastructure and aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to achieve 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen production capacity by 2030. L&T plans to leverage its expertise across manufacturing, engineering, procurement, and construction to play a leading role in the green energy value chain.
Industry analysts note that the Kandla project forms part of L&T’s broader strategy to invest up to ₹48,000 crore in multiple green ammonia facilities, potentially scaling up to 1.8 million tonnes per annum for export to Southeast Asia and Europe. By combining L&T’s infrastructure capabilities with ITOCHU’s global trade network, the partnership is expected to strengthen India’s position in the international green fuel market.
