Kashmir Cherries, Plums Head to Singapore, Promising 50% Higher Farmer Returns: Piyush Goyal

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the first shipment of premium Areko cherries and Centrose plums from Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian and Pulwama districts to Singapore will secure better prices and direct global market access for local growers, marking a fresh boost to India’s agricultural export push.

Goyal called it a significant moment for orchardists in the two districts, crediting the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) for facilitating the shipment. He said the initiative would open new market opportunities and strengthen returns for farmers.

This follows earlier successful exports of Kashmir’s fresh cherries and plums to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, further expanding the reach of the region’s temperate fruit produce internationally.

APEDA organized the flag-off event for the Singapore-bound consignment, partnering with Osum Food Solutions LLP and Fruit Master Agro Fresh Private Limited, based in Pulwama.

Jammu and Kashmir’s agro-climatic conditions make it one of India’s top producers of high-quality temperate fruits, known for their taste, texture and shelf life. The shipment was harvested, graded, packed and moved through a scientific cold-chain process, meeting international food safety and phytosanitary standards to preserve freshness upon arrival.

APEDA noted the initiative could help growers earn returns over 50% higher than through traditional marketing routes. It is also expected to encourage export-focused farming, promote scientific agricultural practices, cut post-harvest losses, and build sustainable livelihoods for fruit-growing communities across the Union Territory.
