Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has secured a ₹4.4 crore consultancy contract from the Maharashtra government to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Mumbai’s proposed Water Metro, modelled on the success of the Kochi Water Metro. The award, finalized through a competitive tender, positions KMRL alongside national consultancies such as Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

The DPR will build on a feasibility study earlier prepared by KMRL, which explored connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s waterways, including Vaitarna, Vasai, Manori, Thane, Panvel, and Karanja. The project envisions a 250 km network with 10 routes and 29 terminals, offering extensive commuter links across India’s financial capital.

The assignment is expected to boost KMRL’s consultancy division, creating an additional revenue stream beyond ticketing. Beyond Mumbai, KMRL is working on inland water transport studies across 18 cities in 11 states and two Union Territories under the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). Reports for Patna and Srinagar have been submitted, while those for Ahmedabad and Guwahati are nearing completion.
