Konkan Railway Corporation (KRC) has significantly improved the efficiency of its Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) service by increasing the permissible carrying capacity of some of its wagons.

The capacity of its Ro-Ro wagons has been raised from 50 tonnes to 57 tonnes. This enhancement is a strategic move to facilitate the transport of heavier commercial vehicles and offer greater load flexibility to logistics providers.

Key Benefits of the Enhanced Capacity:

  • Increased Flexibility: Transporters can now move heavier consignments, which directly translates to improved operational efficiency.
  • Industry Focus: This change is specifically expected to benefit industries dealing with heavy materials such as:
    • Iron and Steel
    • Marble and Tiles
    • Construction Materials
    • Other dense cargo.
  • Logistics Advantage: The Ro-Ro service itself, which began in January 1999, provides a seamless, eco-friendly alternative to road transport by allowing loaded trucks to be directly carried on railway wagons . This reduces fuel consumption, driver fatigue, road congestion, and carbon emissions.

Wagon Details:

  • The new service, which commenced on a recent Wednesday, features 15 BRN wagons capable of carrying trucks loaded up to 57 tonnes.
  • The remaining 35 BOXN wagons in the rake will continue to operate with the existing 50-tonne capacity.

This development reinforces Konkan Railway’s commitment to providing an effective and sustainable freight logistics solution.
