Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL) on Thursday flagged off its first container rake carrying polypropylene from Thokur station in Mangaluru taluk, marking a new milestone in freight operations on the Konkan corridor.
According to an official statement, the consignment belongs to Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL). On average, MRPL is expected to offer around two container rakes per month for transportation to the Morbi region of Rajasthan.
The traffic will be handled by the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) using its own container rakes. CWC and MRPL have entered into a formal agreement to operationalise the containerised movement of polypropylene.
To support containerized and other freight traffic, KRCL, in collaboration with CWC, has developed logistics infrastructure at Thokur station. The facilities include a paved wharf with approach roads, covered warehouses, open stack yards and other modern freight-handling amenities, positioning Thokur as a fully equipped logistics terminal.
KRCL said the commencement of this traffic is expected to encourage other customers to leverage the upgraded facilities at Thokur for storage and transportation of goods to and from the region.
