Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the six-lane Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu over the Brahmaputra in Assam today, adding a major new link between Guwahati and North Guwahati. The 1.24-km extradosed bridge forms part of an 8.4-km connectivity corridor built at an estimated cost of about ₹3,000–3,300 crore, designed to ease pressure on existing bridges and accommodate rapidly growing traffic in the Guwahati metropolitan region.
Officials say the bridge will significantly improve urban mobility and regional connectivity by cutting travel times between the two banks and providing faster access to key institutions and growth nodes in North Guwahati, including IIT Guwahati, AIIMS and industrial parks. It is also expected to support Assam’s plan to develop North Guwahati as a “twin city” extension of the state capital, complementing a broader push that has already seen six bridges built over the Brahmaputra in the state over the past decade.
