Union home and cooperation minister Amit Shah will on Tuesday launch the Land Port Management System (LPMS), a new digital platform aimed at streamlining cargo processing and passenger movement across all of India’s land ports and putting them on par with systems used at major airports and seaports.

According to the home ministry, LPMS will provide end-to-end digital workflows for border trade and travel, covering processes such as slot booking, payments, tracking and clearances, and is expected to make border management more interoperable, efficient and transparent by enabling secure, real-time exchange of logistics and regulatory data among multiple agencies and private operators.

The move comes as the Narendra Modi government sharpens its focus on ‘smart and safe’ borders, using technology to strengthen both security and trade facilitation at India’s land frontiers.

The system has been designed as a neutral, open platform that integrates operations across land ports and supports seamless coordination between stakeholders including customs, immigration, border guarding forces and trade-related service providers, reducing procedural delays and improving overall operational efficiency.

On the day of the LPMS launch in New Delhi, Shah will also inaugurate newly developed stakeholder accommodation facilities at the Dawki land port in Meghalaya and the Srimantapur land port in Tripura to bolster on-ground infrastructure for border personnel and other users of these gateways.

The Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI), a statutory body under the Department of Border Management in the Home Ministry, currently operates 15 land ports along India’s international borders and is responsible for their development and management to support trade, connectivity and regional cooperation, with LPMS forming the core of its digital transformation drive.
