Lloyd’s Register (LR) has unveiled Fire (C, Risk), a new risk-based notation designed to strengthen fire safety assessments on container vessels. The notation, launched in the July 2025 update of LR’s Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Ships, is the first to apply the LR ShipRight Risk Based Certification (RBC) methodology to fire safety in container shipping. It provides shipowners, designers, and operators with a structured framework to evaluate risks and adopt tailored safety enhancements from design through to operations.
Accompanied by detailed guidance, Fire (C, Risk) helps stakeholders identify and implement best-practice fire mitigation measures based on a vessel’s individual risk profile. The approach not only advances safety standards but also aligns with LR’s wider objectives of fostering innovation, embracing new technologies, and enabling digital and data-driven verification in ship design.
