The Lok Sabha has passed the Indian Ports Bill, 2025, aimed at consolidating port-related laws, promoting integrated port development, facilitating ease of doing business, and optimising the use of India’s coastline. The Bill was approved by a voice vote amid continued Opposition sloganeering, after which the House was adjourned till 4:30 p.m.

The legislation seeks to establish and empower State Maritime Boards for the effective management of ports other than major ports, and to set up the Maritime State Development Council to foster structured growth and development of the port sector.

Key provisions include measures for pollution control, disaster management, emergency response, security, safety, navigation, and port data management. The Bill also ensures compliance with India’s international maritime obligations, mandates conservation of ports, and introduces adjudicatory mechanisms for resolving port-related disputes.

By streamlining governance and strengthening infrastructure, the Indian Ports Bill, 2025, is expected to enhance operational efficiency and support the sustainable growth of India’s maritime sector.
