A.P. Moller – Maersk has issued a warning about severe railway capacity reductions at the Port of Koper, Slovenia, due to ongoing upgrades to the nation’s public rail network. These enhancements are aimed at boosting future efficiency and capacity—critical for sustaining growth at the port.
Between June and December 2025, key rail corridors including the vital Ljubljana–Sežana/Koper line will experience major service limitations. Highlights include:
- Divača–Gornje Ležeče section: Full closure from 29 June to 30 July 2025
- Verd–Logatec section: Continuous single-track operation from 4 August to 10 December 2025
Maersk notes further disruptions at major hubs:
- Jesenice station: Weekend closures begin in September 2025, followed by restricted Austria-bound rail traffic from March 2026 to January 2027
- Ljubljana station: Only two lines will remain active for freight and passenger traffic from 6 October 2025 through January 2026
Maersk expects these infrastructure works to reduce rail capacity by 50%, resulting in:
- Less frequent rail services
- More complex schedules
- Heightened risk of shipment delays
Maersk is urging partners to submit orders and documentation early to avoid preventable setbacks. The company’s teams are working with terminals and rail providers to lessen the disruptions and explore alternative logistics options.
Maersk’s green methanol-powered vessel made its debut at the Port of Koper in June 2024, marking a milestone in sustainable shipping amid these infrastructure upgrades.
