Mangalore Port registers 15% rise in cargo throughput

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]New Mangalore Port Trust has registered a growth of 15% in total throughput during the first nine months of the current financial year.

Speaking at the Republic Day celebrations at New Mangalore Port on Thursday, PC Parida, Chairman of NMPT, said that the port registered a growth of 24 per cent in the handling of container cargo during the period.

The total throughput of the port stood at 29.09 million tonnes (mt) during April-December of 2016-17 as against 25.28 mt in the corresponding period of 2015-16, recording a growth of 15.07%. The port handled 66,848 TEU of containers in the first nine months of 2016-17 as against 53,874 TEU in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, recording a growth of 24.08%.

The port is scheduled to handle 30 cruise ships during the current financial year. Of them, 18 vessels have already been handled so far. The port handled 16,259 cruise passengers during the current financial year, he said.

NMPT, which has commissioned a 4.35-MW solar plant, is in the process of installing another 3.5-MW solar plant. Parida said that the port has dedicated the berth no 3, which has a draft of 9.5 metre, for the coastal movement of cargo. He added that this move will help reduce the road congestion and increase coastal trade.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
