Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited is actively evaluating plans to establish a mega shipyard in Maharashtra, according to the company’s chairman.

Track Record

The chairman highlighted MDL’s proven capabilities, noting that the Mumbai-based shipbuilder has successfully executed warship and submarine projects worth ₹84,000 crore from its existing Mumbai yard over the past fifteen years.

Strategic Expansion

The proposed mega shipyard would likely expand MDL’s capacity to handle larger and more complex naval construction projects, supporting India’s maritime defense requirements. The evaluation aligns with the Indian government’s “Make in India” and defense self-reliance policies, potentially positioning MDL to capture a larger share of future naval contracts.

Early Stage Assessment

The evaluation remains at an early stage, with no specific financial commitments or implementation timelines disclosed yet. A new mega shipyard in Maharashtra could create additional employment and industrial activity in the region, though investment figures or completion dates have not been provided.
