Japanese shipping major Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has taken a strategic stake in Commonwealth Kokubu Logistics (CKL), Singapore’s largest cold chain food logistics provider, signalling a sharper focus on temperature-controlled supply chains.
The investment marks MOL’s entry into a fast-expanding segment underpinned by rising demand from pharmaceuticals, processed foods, agricultural exports and e-commerce. Through the partnership, MOL intends to build integrated cold chain capabilities spanning refrigerated transport, warehousing and end-to-end logistics solutions, leveraging CKL’s established expertise in the sector.
MOL said the move is aligned with its medium- and long-term strategy to diversify earnings and expand value-added logistics businesses connected to evolving global trade and consumption patterns. By combining its international shipping network and operational scale with CKL’s domestic cold chain infrastructure and market knowledge, the two companies aim to unlock operational and commercial synergies.
The transaction also reflects a wider industry trend, with global shipping companies increasingly investing in specialised logistics verticals that offer more stable, long-term growth and greater resilience than traditional container shipping, particularly in segments requiring high levels of technical capability and infrastructure investment.
