Global container shipping leaders MSC and Maersk are joining France’s CMA CGM in reflagging vessels to the Indian register, underscoring India’s growing role in global maritime trade. The move allows operators to benefit from India’s cabotage laws and tap into expanding coastal trade along the nation’s shores.
CMA CGM led the way earlier this year, registering four vessels in India shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the company’s Marseille headquarters. The French carrier has since unveiled plans to build containerships in India — a significant boost to the country’s shipbuilding ambitions.
Following suit, Maersk has reflagged the Maersk Vilnius, according to shipping database Equasis, with reports indicating that Maersk Vigo is next in line. Meanwhile, MSC, the world’s largest container line, is expected to announce similar reflagging plans during the upcoming India Maritime Week.
This surge in reflagging aligns with the Modi government’s Maritime India Vision 2030, which aims to modernize ports, expand coastal and inland waterways, and attract investments in shipbuilding, ship repair, and allied maritime services.
