The first photograph has emerged showing all 14 Indian crew members safe after the Indian-flagged mechanized sailing vessel MSV Virat 1 sank off Oman’s coast due to engine failure.
The incident occurred around 80 nautical miles east of Ras al Hadd on the Oman coast when the vessel reportedly suffered mechanical failure and experienced engine trouble, forcing the crew to abandon ship and move onto a life raft.
The US Navy played a key role in the rescue operation, deploying a P8 maritime patrol aircraft that dropped a life raft and helped coordinate the emergency response. Search and rescue operations were coordinated with Omani authorities and vessels operating nearby in cooperation with Indian naval authorities.
All 14 crew members were safely evacuated from the sinking vessel, and officials have confirmed that there was no attack by anybody—this was purely a mechanical failure incident.
The Indian Embassy in Muscat confirmed the incident involving the Indian-flagged vessel and stated that search and rescue operations are being coordinated with Omani authorities as details continue to emerge.
