Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) has set a target of handling 80 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo in the current financial year, after achieving its highest-ever throughput of 75.15 MMT in FY 2025-26.

At a stakeholder meeting in Mumbai, the port reviewed its performance and identified priorities to enhance efficiency, vessel turnaround and berth utilisation. MbPA’s FY26 performance translated into an 8.22% share of cargo handled by India’s major ports, along with a 35% market share in iron and steel EXIM cargo, 15.5% in liquid bulk and 10.48% in coastal trade.

Chairperson Dr M Angamuthu credited the record numbers to the collective efforts of port users, trade partners and government agencies, noting that each million tonne of cargo contributes to revenue, jobs and wider economic growth. Officials said discussions focused on improving key performance indicators, strengthening Mumbai Port’s distinct offshore and allied cargo operations, and ensuring faster, more cost-effective services.

Participants, including port users and terminal operators, also reviewed upcoming initiatives such as the proposed marina development. MbPA said its future emphasis will be on boosting cargo volumes, adopting more eco-friendly cargo handling practices and deepening coordination with stakeholders to support the growth of maritime trade.
