Nagapattinam International Port is set to get duty-free shops as ferry traffic between India and Sri Lanka continues to rise. The move is aimed at improving the passenger experience at the international terminal and bringing the port’s retail offerings closer to global travel standards.

The proposed duty-free outlets will allow eligible international travellers to purchase selected goods without applicable customs duties and taxes, in line with government regulations. Officials expect the facilities to add convenience for passengers while also making the terminal more attractive as a regional travel gateway.

The development comes as the India–Sri Lanka ferry corridor gains momentum, creating demand for more passenger-friendly services at the port. The retail upgrade is also expected to support tourism and strengthen maritime links between the two countries.

Under the plan, the duty-free complex will be operated by a private player on an outsourced basis. The first operators identified for the space include Royale Electronics and United Life, which are expected to bring a wider retail mix to the terminal.

Implementation is likely to begin in July, with the duty-free shops targeted to become operational within the next six months. Once launched, the addition is expected to enhance the port’s profile as an international passenger terminal and improve the overall travel experience for ferry users.
