In a major step toward strengthening India’s multimodal freight network, a new Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal (GCT) has been commissioned at Jakhapura under the Khurda Road Division of the East Coast Railway.
Located in Jajpur district, Odisha, the terminal is part of the PM Gati Shakti – National Master Plan, aimed at developing integrated and seamless logistics infrastructure across the country.
Developed at a cost of ₹36.85 crore, according to the Detailed Project Report (DPR), the Jakhapura terminal features four handling lines and is designed for exclusive use. It will primarily manage cement as the key outbound commodity, while clinker, slag, and gypsum will serve as major inbound materials.
The terminal is projected to handle around 86 rakes per month, including 36 outward and 50 inward rakes, facilitating the smooth movement of both raw materials and finished goods for the cement and allied industries in the region.
Officials said the commissioning of the new GCT will significantly enhance freight handling efficiency, reduce logistics costs, and improve industrial supply chain connectivity in eastern India. The terminal is expected to play a key role in supporting the region’s growing industrial base and contribute to the East Coast Railway’s overall freight performance.
By bolstering rail-based logistics infrastructure, the Jakhapura GCT aligns with the government’s broader goal of promoting cost-effective, sustainable, and integrated transport solutions under the PM Gati Shakti framework, providing a vital boost to both industrial development and regional economic growth in Odisha.
