The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has registered a 9.63 percent year-on-year growth in freight unloading during September 2025, continuing its steady upward trajectory in cargo handling across the region.
The zone unloaded a total of 1,059 freight rakes during the month, compared to 966 rakes in September 2024. The growth reflects improved operational efficiency and strong demand for essential commodities in the Northeast.
food grains,The consignments handled by NFR included FCI rice, sugar, salt, edible oil, food grains, fertilizers, cement, coal, vegetables, automobiles, tankers, and other goods. These were unloaded at various goods sheds spread across NFR’s extensive network.
A substantial share of the traffic catered to the northeastern states, with Assam alone accounting for 595 rakes, including 291 carrying essential commodities. In the same period, 83 rakes were unloaded in Tripura, 21 in Nagaland, 7 in Arunachal Pradesh, 20 in Manipur, 2 in Meghalaya, and 19 in Mizoram.
Beyond the core Northeast, the zone also handled freight operations in parts of West Bengal and Bihar, where 179 and 133 rakes, respectively, were unloaded during September.
The Northeast Frontier Railway, one of the 17 zones of Indian Railways, serves all northeastern states, besides operating in seven districts of West Bengal and five districts of north Bihar.
In a major infrastructure milestone, Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, recently became the fourth capital city in the Northeast to be connected by rail, following Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 51.38-km Bairabi–Sairang railway project on September 13, marking a new chapter in regional connectivity.
