State-owned National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL) have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen integrated infrastructure development, with a focus on seamless road–rail connectivity across challenging terrains. The umbrella MoU provides for the two entities to jointly identify, plan and pursue areas of mutual interest in order to enhance efficiency, safety and economic value in transport infrastructure.

According to the official statement, key areas of collaboration include integrated planning of national highway and railway infrastructure such as rail-cum-road bridges and tunnels, multi-modal logistics parks, inter-modal hubs and grade separators where highways intersect or run alongside railway lines. The MoU also envisages development of common utility corridors wherever feasible to optimise land use and reduce project costs.

The partnership will allow NHAI to tap into KRCL’s expertise in executing projects in difficult and hilly terrains, including specialised support for review and proof-check of designs, drawings and safety aspects for complex bridge and tunnel works, as well as slope stabilisation. It also covers safety and quality audits of existing tunnels and slope protection structures, and training programmes for NHAI personnel at KRCL’s training institute.

Further, NHAI and KRCL will work together to adopt advanced technologies and digital solutions for project monitoring, traffic and asset management, and smart infrastructure applications. The MoU provides for data sharing between the two agencies to improve planning and operational efficiency, reinforcing a coordinated approach to future highway and rail projects.
