In a landmark achievement for India-Nepal rail connectivity, the first-ever direct commercial container freight train, comprising 40 wagons carrying a consignment of canola, has completed its journey from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar Customs Yard in Nepal, marking the operationalisation of the revised India-Nepal Rail Transit Protocol.
What makes this container freight movement historic?
The train’s journey opens a new chapter in cross-border freight transportation between India and Nepal. Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, CPRO of Northeast Frontier Railway, said the train operated seamlessly under the revised transit framework, enabling direct rail movement of bulk cargo from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar without transhipment at the border for the first time.
How does this benefit India-Nepal trade logistics?
Sharma said the direct movement is expected to significantly reduce transit time, logistics costs and cargo handling while improving overall trade efficiency between the two neighbouring countries. The achievement builds on the broad-gauge rail link between Jogbani in India and Biratnagar in Nepal, inaugurated in June 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nepal’s then Prime Minister.
What paved the way for this direct rail movement?
Following the signing of the revised Letter of Exchange in November 2025, direct commercial rail movement to Nepal has become operational reality. Sharma said the milestone highlights the growing role of Northeast Frontier Railway in strengthening international rail connectivity and facilitating seamless cross-border trade.
What does this mean for future India-Nepal rail connectivity?
Sharma said the initiative is expected to boost bilateral commerce, improve logistics efficiency and reinforce India’s commitment to enhancing regional connectivity through modern railway infrastructure. He added that Northeast Frontier Railway will continue strengthening cross-border rail links, enhancing freight logistics and supporting the growing trade and economic partnership between India and Nepal through efficient, reliable and customer-focused railway services.
