More than 60 shipping containers fell from a cargo vessel at the Port of Long Beach, with dozens plunging into the harbour waters. The incident occurred shortly before 9 a.m. when containers toppled from the Mississippi, a Portugal-flagged ship, according to port spokesperson Art Marroquin. The US. Coast Guard confirmed that about 67 containers ended up in the water. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

As a precaution, operations at Pier G—one of the port’s six terminals—were temporarily suspended while crews worked to secure the site.

The Mississippi had departed from Yantian Port in Shenzhen, China, on August 26 before arriving at Long Beach, one of the busiest US container gateways, handling around 40% of the nation’s maritime trade. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the mishap.
