Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated two key maritime infrastructure projects in West Bengal as part of a Rs 830 crore development package, enhancing the state’s role in India’s logistics and trade ecosystem.
Balagarh Extended Port Gate System
The foundation stone for the Extended Port Gate System at Balagarh in Hooghly district spans 900 acres and includes an Inland Water Transport terminal, road overbridge, and dedicated jetties for containerised and dry bulk cargo. This modern cargo terminal targets 2.7 million tonnes per annum capacity, easing road congestion to Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port and creating jobs in logistics and operations.
Electric Catamaran Launch
PM Modi flagged off the first hybrid-electric catamaran in Kolkata, built by Cochin Shipyard as part of a six-vessel series for Hooghly River operations. With capacity for 50 passengers, lithium-titanate batteries, and zero-emission propulsion, it supports urban mobility, eco-tourism, and last-mile connectivity.
Strategic Impact
These initiatives align with port-led development, positioning West Bengal as a trade and logistics hub linking eastern India to the Northeast. They benefit MSMEs, regional industries, and agriculture through improved multimodal connectivity and inland waterways.
