Ports Secretary Vijay Kumar has directed a detailed study on the possibilities of moving cargo through the Gurupura and Nethravati rivers.
During his visit to New Mangalore Port Authority, he reviewed port operations, ongoing projects, and future development plans. He also held discussions with port users and other stakeholders to understand current logistics needs and opportunities for improving cargo movement in the region.
Inland Waterway Potential
The study will examine whether the two rivers can support cargo transport as part of a broader effort to strengthen inland waterways and coastal shipping in Karnataka. Such a move could help diversify transport options and reduce pressure on road-based logistics.
The focus is expected to be on feasibility, connectivity, and the practical requirements needed to make river-based cargo movement viable. If implemented effectively, it could add another layer to regional trade and logistics infrastructure.
Stakeholder Discussions
The meeting brought together representatives from major port users, industry, stevedore agents, and trade unions. These discussions are important because any shift toward river-based cargo movement will require coordination across operators, cargo handlers, and local industry.
