PSA Chennai, officially known as Chennai International Terminals Pvt. Ltd. (CITPL), has achieved a major operational milestone by handling a record 34,425 TEUs in just one week — the highest weekly throughput in its history and a 45% surge over the terminal’s designed capacity.
The performance marks a significant leap from the terminal’s usual weekly average of around 24,000 TEUs. In a statement, PSA Chennai credited the achievement to the “team’s agility and the terminal’s ability to flex capacity when our customers need us most,” underscoring its commitment to reliability and customer service.
CITPL operates as one of two modern deep-water container terminals at Chennai Port and was awarded under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) concession in 2007 as part of India’s port privatization programme aimed at expanding container handling capacity to meet rising trade demand. The terminal is a wholly owned subsidiary of PSA International Pte Ltd, the Singapore-based global port group that manages more than 70 terminals across the world.
Since its commissioning, PSA Chennai has played a pivotal role in facilitating trade for Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry, serving as a crucial gateway for South India’s growing manufacturing and export sectors — especially in automobiles, textiles, and electronics.
The terminal features RFID-enabled truck gates, container freight stations (CFS), on-site scanning and security facilities, and is manned by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). PSA Chennai has also prioritized sustainability by adopting energy-efficient technologies and initiatives aimed at reducing CO₂ emissions.
Over the years, PSA Chennai has built a reputation for high productivity, operational efficiency, and resilience, consistently achieving new records even amid global challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic. Its focus on innovation, safety, and customer service has earned it multiple industry awards and reinforced its position as a key enabler of South India’s trade growth.
