Cargo operations at Rajkot International Airport have received official approval from the Central Aviation Department. The services will be handled from the old terminal building of Hirasar Airport, offering a major logistical advantage to Rajkot’s industrial and business sectors—who will no longer need to depend on Ahmedabad for goods transport. The service is anticipated to begin once pricing is finalized within the next two days, although a firm launch date is yet to be announced. Operations will commence following the inauguration of the new airport by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The service will greatly benefit around 10,000 industrialists and businessmen across Saurashtra by making it easier to send product samples by air. Traders can now dispatch goods weighing between 100 kg and 1 ton via cargo. This development will especially benefit those dealing in imitation and gold jewellery. Additionally, exporters of plastic parts and investment casting components will also find it more convenient to send their samples abroad.
The MSME sector in Saurashtra, including Rajkot, and the tiles industry in Morbi will benefit from this service. However, the actual impact hinges on the cargo fare. If sending goods via Ahmedabad proves to be more cost-effective, traders will prefer shipping from Ahmedabad instead of Rajkot.
