At the 14th East Asia Summit, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar gave a clarion call for securing the key maritime routes passing through the South China Sea, taking a direct hit at Chinese disputes with Southeast Asian countries. He called for a code of conduct to be followed in the South China Sea, in compliance with the international law. The resource-rich South China Sea in the Indo-Pacific region is widely seen as a potential flashpoint for global conflict.
