Scania Commercial Vehicles India, which has so far built its heavy-duty truck business primarily around the mining sector, is now looking to expand into on-road applications including first-mile e-commerce and heavy-haul freight, as the Swedish commercial vehicle maker seeks to scale up its presence in what it sees as a key market going forward.
Why is Scania diversifying beyond its core mining business?
Scania Commercial Vehicles India Managing Director Silvio Munhoz said the company sees significant potential in India outside coal mining, with on-road markets and niche applications increasingly demanding more technologically advanced and powerful products, an area he said Scania is well positioned to serve. He said the company is planning to build more product modules to reach additional niches and grow gradually in the on-road segment.
How is e-commerce shaping Scania’s growth strategy?
E-commerce is one of the major applications Scania will target while continuing to serve its core mining segment. Munhoz said demand for trucks in e-commerce extends well beyond small commercial vehicles used for last-mile deliveries, pointing to substantial requirements for large trucks and trailers moving goods from factories to distribution centres. He said the market is shifting from traditional trucks toward longer vehicle compositions that are faster and more reliable, with operators increasingly running trucks for seven to eight years without major overhaul rather than replacing them every three to five years, as e-commerce logistics demand highly reliable transportation.
What is Scania’s approach to the heavy-haulage segment?
Scania will also strengthen its focus on heavy haulage, having already sold units of a tractor-puller module, with plans to introduce more options in this category. Munhoz said the company sees demand for high-power vehicles capable of transporting large equipment, including power transformers, between factories and ports.
How does imported coal transportation fit into Scania’s plans?
Munhoz identified a further opportunity in transporting imported coal from ports to power plants, noting that while such coal is not moved in bulk like larger mining transport operations, it typically involves truck-and-trailer combinations, a segment where he sees good potential for the company.
What product expansion is Scania planning?
The company currently offers three truck models with multiple variants in its India portfolio and plans to add more gradually. Munhoz said Scania will conduct trials next year to test different products across various applications and assess total cost of ownership, adding that once TCO is proven viable, expanding the portfolio becomes a straightforward decision, with the company’s overall direction focused on growth.
What are Scania’s sales expectations and manufacturing setup in India?
Scania expects to sell 220-250 trucks in India this year, more than double its sales last year. The company currently imports trucks as CKD units and assembles them at its facility in Narasapura, Karnataka, which has an annual capacity of 2,000 units. At Bauma CONEXPO INDIA 2026, Scania Commercial Vehicles India expanded its heavy-duty mining portfolio with the unveiling of the G 560 Super 10×4 Mining Tipper.
