The Indian Ports and Shipping Industry plays a vital role in sustaining the growth of the country’s trade and commerce. The Ministry of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry is focused on creating positive environment so that logistics sector including ports are able to function in a seamless way. Shri Shailendra Singh, IAS, Additional Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy & Promotions (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry paid a visit to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) on Tuesday with a view to get a first- hand experience of measures implemented at JNPT to boost EXIM Trade.
Dr. C. Unnikrishnan Nair, Chief Manager (Traffic) made a brief presentation to Shri Singh on the strategic and customer-oriented DPD initiative which is being implemented at JNPT with a view to reduce both cost and time for the EXIM trade and reduce congestion at the port. JNPT has already achieved close to 35 per cent cargo movement by DPD mode and is working towards achieving over 50 per cent DPD mode of delivery.
Shri Shailendra Singh went around the port facilities and familiarized himself with latest activities at JNPT. Shri Singh visited four terminals to understand the port operation and the ongoing and future capacity building projects along with Ease of Doing Business initiatives taken by the port. Shri Singh held discussion with other terminal operators-GTI, NSICT and NSIGT to understand the concerns and work out solutions for increasing the DPD share for the overall benefit of the Trade.
Shri Singh called upon all the four terminal operators to switch over to DPD mode of transport with a view to bring more efficiency in transportation as well as saving in cost and time for the EXIM community.
