Sinotrans Container Lines has contracted for 12 new container vessels with a combined nominal capacity of around 52,000 TEU, marking a major fleet expansion initiative.

Vessel Specifications

The newbuilding program comprises three vessel categories:

  • Four 8,200 TEU ships to be built by China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu)
  • Four 3,000 TEU ships at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing)
  • Four 1,800 TEU ships at China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group Wuhan Qingshan Shipyard

All vessels will incorporate the latest SDARI designs and feature advanced smart systems, including intelligent behavior recognition, intelligent energy-efficiency management, and intelligent hull fouling monitoring capabilities. Ship deliveries are expected to begin in 2027.

Strategic Integration

The initiative demonstrates internal industrial coordination within China Merchants Group, where Sinotrans Container Lines serves as the container shipping platform under China Merchants Energy Shipping. All three shipyards belong to the China Merchants shipbuilding system, creating seamless integration between the group’s shipping demand and shipbuilding capabilities.

Benefits

For Sinotrans Container Lines, the 12 new vessels will substantially boost fleet capacity, expand route coverage, and enhance service capabilities. For China Merchants Group, the project exemplifies how integrating shipping, shipbuilding, and design resources can strengthen fleet renewal efforts and long-term competitiveness.
