Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP), Kolkata, has reported strong cargo performance with 5.7 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo handled in May 2026, reflecting robust operational efficiency and sustained growth across its cargo segments.
The May 2026 throughput underscores the port’s continued momentum in cargo handling, following its record-breaking performance in the first quarter of the financial year 2025-26. Between April and June 2025 alone, SMP Kolkata had already handled 17.186 million metric tonnes of cargo, registering a robust growth of 21.21 per cent compared to the previous year.
Port performance highlights
May 2026 achievement: 5.7 MMT cargo handled
February 2026: 6.193 MMT cargo, up 2.31 per cent year-on-year
April 2025-February 2026 cumulative: 64.026 MMT, marking 10.95 per cent growth over the corresponding period last year
FY 2023-24 record: The port previously broke all-time record by handling 66.4 MMT of cargo, a 1.11 per cent increase from its earlier record of 65.66 MMT in 2022-23
Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata is India’s only riverine major port, located 203 kilometres from the sea in Kolkata, West Bengal. It is the oldest operating port in India and operates through two distinct dock systems – the Kolkata Dock System and the Haldia Dock Complex. The port serves as a critical gateway for freight and passenger services to Nepal, Bhutan and India’s northeastern states.
