Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner, Sudharshan Seneviratne stated that the government is eager to welcome investment from Bangladeshi entrepreneurs in the tourist and agriculture industries. The envoy told a gathering at the FBCCI office that his country offers significant benefits for foreign investments, including tax holidays. Bangladeshi business people can benefit from investing in Sri Lanka’s large undeveloped territory.

Ambassador Seneviratne said the Colombo port currently has four harbours and is equipped with contemporary facilities, and he requested Bangladesh’s participation in the growth of tourism and shipping. As a result, he encouraged Bangladeshi cargo ships to transit through Colombo.

The FBCCI President Md Jashim Uddin said a free trade agreement between the two countries would make it easier to increase bilateral trade and investment.

Also urging to increase regional trade, the FBCCI chief said most of Bangladesh’s trade is with the United States and the European Union. But it is more profitable to do business with neighbouring countries. Referring to the huge volume of inter-trade in the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), the president said that if the South Asian Free Trade Area (Safta) was implemented, the development of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) countries would have been accelerated.
